Administrators or teachers can use this class preference to choose which target model each class will use. The target model determines the types of targets and how students will see their targets and progress. Teachers can also choose a target model when they go to the Student Targets tab in the Accelerated Reader Record Book.
How to Get to This Preference
To get to the Reading Targets Model preference page, follow these steps:
- On the Home page, select your initials in the top right corner. Then, choose Edit Preferences from the menu that opens.
- Select Reading Targets Model under the Class Preferences on the Preferences page.
Targets Models Available
Three target models are available for your class; see the descriptions below. The model that you choose will determine how you set targets and what your students see when they view their targets and progress.
-
Badge and Token Target Model for Young Students: Students earn tokens when they pass quizzes, and those tokens count toward character badges. Teachers select the student Star test scores (or reading age) to base targets on; then, they set the expected amount of daily reading time. Based on these selections, the software calculates each student's target for passed quizzes for the students' entire school year (not individual marking periods). Targets are based on the number of tokens required for each badge because students see the targets in terms of how many badges they need to earn. These targets are intended for your youngest students, including years 1-3 (UK), K-2 (Australia), P2-P4 (Scotland and Northern Ireland), or SI-2nd Class (the Republic of Ireland). For more information, see Setting Up Badge and Token Targets in the Accelerated Reader Record Book.
-
Rocket Target Model: Students have targets for their average percentage correct on quizzes, the number of points they earn, and their reading range. These targets can be set for any school marking period or the school year. By default, targets are based on students' first Star test of the school year (if available) and 15 minutes of daily reading, but teachers can edit these values and change individual targets. Students see their points target in terms of a rocket heading toward a planet, with a celebration when they meet their target. Students see their average percentage correct targets on a gauge so they can compare their achievement to the target; students also see their reading range and a message about their selection of books. Students also see a summary of their reading, and if they have taken Star Reading and Star Maths tests, they see their Star scores. This target model is intended for years 4-6 in the UK, years 3-5 in Australia, years P5-P7 in Scotland and Northern Ireland, or the 3rd to 5th class in the Republic of Ireland.
-
Bar-Graph Target Model: Teachers set targets for older students just as they do in the previous model. Students also see their average percentage correct targets and reading ranges in the same way; however, the points target is shown on a bar graph instead of with the rocket animation. This target model is intended for students in years 6 and higher in the UK, years 7 and higher in Australia, years S1 and higher in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the 6th class and higher in the Republic of Ireland.
