As you set targets in Accelerated Reader, the software will calculate recommended targets based on students' Star test scores or year or reading age. When you use one of the two target models for older students, you will also see a target calculator that allows you to calculate targets for each student using the test or reading age you choose and to select the the expected daily reading time.
You can also find Target-Setting Charts in the Accelerated Reader Resources to help you set targets. Two charts are available:
- The Target-Setting Chart for Emerging Readers is meant to be used with the target model for young students, in which students earn tokens by passing quizzes that allow them to earn character badges. For Zones of Proximal Development, and different amounts of daily reading practice, the chart shows you how many books/passed quizzes Accelerated Reader recommends as well as the number of badges the student must earn from each target area to meet the target.
- The Target-Setting Chart for Independent Readers is intended for the two target models for older students. For Zones of Proximal Development, and for different amounts of daily reading practice, the chart shows you the number of points you can generally expect students to earn in one week, 6 weeks, and 9 weeks.
Use the charts as a flexible guideline for setting personalised, realistic targets with your students based on their reading levels, amount of practice time, and need for success or challenge.
